Hey, Berkeley Knights!
As Berkeley’s Fashion Blogger, I was invited to attend the ENK International | Coterie Trade Show!
As a student majoring in Fashion Merchandising & Management, this was a big deal to me because it was a sneak peek to what could be my future career.
What is Coterie?
WHAT: ENK International Trade Show | FASHION COTERIE
The ENK’s FASHION COTERIE brand is the unrivaled marketplace for women’s high-end designer, contemporary, denim and lifestyle fashion in the United States. It is a “must attend” exhibition for high-end buyers and sellers of women’s fashion.
WHERE: New York, New York | Jacob K. Javits Convention Center
WHEN: ENK International conducts 22 events per year, 16 of which are held in New York City, and five in Los Angeles. (Dates can be found on ENKshows.com)
WHO: 9,000 domestic and international exhibiting companies serving the upscale fashion marketplace, including the men’s, women’s, accessories, footwear, and children’s categories.
ENK International provides the forum for the buyers of the fashion world to conduct business. Not only does ENK allow the buyers to come and purchase pieces for the companies they represent such as Bloomingdale’s, Saks, Macy’s but ENK has given buyers an option called “Shop the Floor” where the buyers can virtually visit the showroom online as well as order the pieces they feel would fit their clientele.
Walking through Coterie and previewing the SS’14 collection of my favorite brands such as BCBG, Kate Spade, Free People, Rachel Zoe, Alice & Olivia was absolutely jaw dropping. It was fascinating to see the way each merchandising team designed their space to displayed their pieces. BCBG and most of the big label brands had a private and closed off booth that was exclusively for buyers to focus on ordering from the company. However, there were booths that weren’t closed off and I was able to see the whole collection and watch how the merchandisers would show the buyers different pieces from the collection that they felt suited their clientele. I can’t wait to see which pieces the buyers went with and view them on the floors of department stores coming SS’14. As a student at Berkeley College majoring in Fashion Merchandising and Management being at Coterie it gave me an inside look on how it is to work in the fashion industry as a buyer and merchandiser.
Joshua Williams, Berkeley’s Fashion Chair, thoughts on this year’s Coterie show…
“My overall sense was that the show was busy (good attendance) and there was a lot of commerce, up from previous seasons. There also seemed to be more international buyers there than domestic, which suggests that foreign markets are still interested in American brands/fashion and still consider NYC an important of their buying routine. There was definitely a sense of optimism.”- Joshua Williams
Attending the Coterie show was just the beginning!!! I also had the opportunity to interview Tom Nastos, President of ENK International!
He has achieved so much in the years he has dedicated to the Fashion Industry. It was a surreal feeling interviewing someone so accomplished. He is an extremely motivating person and inspired me to start thinking of where I might be in three years. After the interview I felt motivated to create as Tom advised “a 3 year plan,” to set goals that would help me navigate to where I want to be in three years.
Stay tuned for the full interview!
Networking plays a huge role in how far you will get in the field, knowing how to represent your brand and being knowledgeable about the field leaves a good first impression on the company you potentially want to work with.
Thank you Berkeley for the amazing opportunity and for opening the doors to meet and establish new relationships.xo
