Hey everyone! This weekend I went to see Once on Broadway, and I loved it! It’s one of the best musicals I’ve ever seen. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Broadway shows, considering I tend to literally fall asleep before the intermission, but this one kept me wishing it wouldn’t end.
Winner of 8 2012 Tony Awards including BEST MUSICAL, ONCE is a truly original Broadway experience. Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, ONCE tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights… but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance.
The show actually started off-Broadway, but would move soon to Bernard Jacobs Theater on Broadway soon due to the great success it got. It won 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and they are all very well deserved. The stars are now Arthur Darvill and Joanna Christie, and I immediately became a big fan of both!
Don’t expect a huge production with spectacular sets. The stage is turned into an actual bar (the audience can go up for drinks during the intermission!) and the cast’s talent is enough to take you to the different locations where the story takes place.
There isn’t an orchestra like the ones you’re used to see in big broadway shows. All the instruments are played by the cast on stage, which makes it more incredible because music really is part of the story here. Their voices are also remarkable… they left me speechless!
As a tip, I would recommend spending a little more and having nice seats. Because it’s all about the actors, watching their expressions adds up to the whole experience. However, they do have student rush and lower rates for further seats. Either way, I’m sure you will enjoyed and won’t be bored.
