This is Jasmine Lee & Henderson & Elijah Johnson of the Berkeley Press Team! We were given an assignment to find the best sandwich in New York City! One of the benefits of being in New York City is the endless supply of food options. Everything from Pizza to Falafels to empanadas is at your disposal. Luckily, we found an amazing Sandwich shop in Downtown Manhattan called Defonte’s of Brooklyn. We expected it to be another Subway-esque shop with a few more things to choose from but we were pleasantly proven wrong.

Defontes Sandwich

Originally opening in Red Hook, Brooklyn in 1922 by the Defonte brothers, they specialize in both Hot & Cold Italian Sandwiches. While there, we saw that the place wasn’t just another Italian restaurant in NYC but after being Zagat recommended, featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show on the Food Network and some notable celebrity co-signs over the years, they’ve built quite a reputation for their food.

Elijah’s Sandwich:

After finally getting through the menu, I decided to get the Buffalo Chicken Hero. Other than the general lettuce, carrots, bleu cheese, Buffalo sauce & celery it came with, I decided to add mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes & peppers. For the amount of food that is given as well as the quality of it, paying a total of $11.70 was no problem at all. Believe me when I tell you, it got messy while eating it but Lord knows it was delicious! Everything from the way they seasoned the chicken down to the way they arranged the toppings to make sure the flavor came through with each bite, I can definitely say it was a great sandwich.

Jasmine’s Sandwich:

After I narrowed down my decisions, I decided to go with the Defonte’s Cuban Hero; I was unaware that what I ordered would become lunch for the next day. The Defonte’s Cuban Hero consisted of all the essentials but the best part was that all of the meats were fresh cooked and full of flavor; roast pork, Virginia ham, swiss, pickles all on garlic bread. Every bite was full of flavor and for $10.95 it was worth every penny.

12 years of Defonte’s dedication

There aren’t many places that you can sit in to eat and feel like you’re around genuine people who take pride in the food they prepare and sell. Defonte’s was surely a place we enjoyed and plan to attend again. We highly recommend that you try it for yourself. We are sure you won’t be disappointed.
