Hi my name is Ashley Alba. This is my third quarter and I’m going to major in Health Services Management.
Since High School I have been volunteering in Nursing Homes and Golden Age Clubs. I started a volunteer program in High School and brought it here to Berkeley College.
Student Development and Campus Life, Counseling Services and the Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda came together with the program “Serve Smiles to Senior Citizens.” We volunteer once a month at the St. Vincent’s Nursing Home in Cedar Grove.
I enjoy it a lot and it`s such a great experience. It means a lot to me to see how joyful the senior citizens get when the Berkeley Students arrive. Just to see the seniors smile and socialize with us makes my day.
This program means a lot to me and it changed my life in High School. It made me see life from a different perspective. The fact that you can bring joy and laughter to a senior who feels lonely is such a blessing.
Some senior citizens don`t have family and feel very lonely in these nursing homes. Many are sick and spend their days sad with no one to talk to. My goal with this program is to MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the lives of others and for them to know that we Berkeley Students are here for them and will help make their lives better!
